Early intervention is critical in aortic dissection

Op. Dr. Hüsnü Sezer stated that aortic dissection occurs as a result of the separation of the layers of the main artery exiting the heart and that this condition is extremely dangerous in terms of mortality risk.

Stating that if there is no intervention within the first 48 hours, the risk of death increases by 1 to 3 percent every hour, Sezer emphasized that more than 90 percent of patients lose their lives after one week.

Stating that the most prominent symptom of aortic dissection is sudden and severe chest pain, Sezer noted that this pain is often described by patients as "something tore inside me." Sezer stated that although the pain may decrease over time, it does not go away completely, whereas in a heart attack, the pain gradually increases and worsens with exertion.

RISK FACTORS AND DIAGNOSTIC METHODS

Sezer stated that risk factors for aortic dissection include the 40-50 age range, male gender, genetic connective tissue diseases, and congenital aortic valve anomalies.

He added that high blood pressure is also a significant risk factor.

Emphasizing that the patient's complaints must be evaluated correctly during the diagnostic process, Sezer said that imaging methods such as ECG, echocardiography, and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) are used for definitive diagnosis.

Stating that surgery is indispensable in the treatment of aortic dissection, Sezer expressed that early surgical intervention significantly increases the patient's chances of survival.

THE IMPORTANCE OF HEALTHY LIFESTYLE HABITS

Touching upon heart attacks as well, Sezer stated that blockage in the coronary arteries cuts off blood flow to the heart muscle, which leads to a heart attack. He emphasized that individuals experiencing symptoms such as chest tightness and pain triggered by exertion must consult healthcare institutions.

Stating that healthy lifestyle habits are effective in protecting against cardiovascular diseases, Sezer drew attention to the importance of natural nutrition, regular exercise, stress management, and blood pressure control. Expressing that daily brisk walks contribute to both heart health and general body health, Sezer stated that desk workers should not forget the risks of a sedentary lifestyle and recommended that they take at least 45 minutes of brisk walking every day.

Stating that individuals with a family history of cardiovascular disease at a young age should undergo more frequent screenings, Sezer added that genetic predisposition increases the risk of the disease.
