Energy drinks 'increase the risk of suicidal thoughts'
It has been revealed that the consumption of energy drinks by children and young people increases the risk of 'suicidal thoughts'...
A comprehensive study revealing that drinks containing high levels of caffeine and sugar have a 'harmful' effect on children's health and academic performance has been published in the Public Health Journal.
This major study, which examines how energy drinks affect the mental and physical health of children, has alarmed parents by suggesting that caffeinated drinks can lead to a range of health problems in children, such as headaches and stomach aches, and may serve as a 'gateway' to alcohol consumption.
Dr. Shelina Visram from Newcastle University, the author of the study, stated: “We are deeply concerned about the findings that energy drinks can cause psychological distress and mental health issues. This is a significant public health issue that needs to be addressed.”
According to a report in The Sun newspaper, this study, which analyzed data from 51 studies covering 1.2 million children worldwide, found that boys consume more carbonated energy drinks than girls.
According to the research, children who use energy drinks were found to be more likely to engage in risky behaviors such as illegal substance use, violence, and unsafe sexual intercourse.
Furthermore, it was determined that these carbonated drinks increase the likelihood of poor academic performance, sleep problems, anxiety, depression, and unhealthy eating habits.
A typical can of energy drink contains the same amount of caffeine as an espresso. It also contains other active ingredients such as guarana and taurine.
For adults, an average daily caffeine intake of up to 400mg is recommended, but there is very little research on tolerable levels for adolescents and children.
William Roberts from the Royal Society for Public Health drew attention to the danger, saying, “This important review adds to the growing evidence that energy drinks can negatively affect the physical and mental health of children and young people, both in the short and long term.”
