Expert explains: Are electronic cigarettes more harmful than regular cigarettes?

Prof. Dr. Onur Noyan, a psychiatrist at Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hospital, made important statements regarding the effects of e-cigarettes on addiction and health on the occasion of August 1, World Lung Cancer Awareness Day.

Prof. Dr. Onur Noyan stated that e-cigarettes contain unknown chemicals and that these chemicals can lead to lung complications.

CAN LEAD TO ANOTHER ADDICTION

Emphasizing that e-cigarettes are as addictive as regular cigarettes and accelerate the transition to addiction, Noyan stated that using e-cigarettes in addiction treatment leads to another form of addiction.

Noyan said that lung and metabolic problems caused by the chemical substances in e-cigarettes are similar to the harms found in regular cigarettes. Pointing out the false belief that e-cigarettes are less harmful than regular cigarettes, Noyan stated that these products are not effective in overcoming addiction.

RISK OF SECONDHAND SMOKING

Emphasizing that people who want to quit smoking should seek medical and psychological support instead of turning to e-cigarettes, Noyan stated that psychotherapy should be included in the treatment process alongside nicotine withdrawal treatment. Noting that the risk of secondhand smoking from e-cigarettes is also high, Noyan drew attention to the importance of expert support in the smoking cessation process.
