Expert warns: 'The black spot seen at the base of the nail...'

The 6th Black Sea Symposium on Innovations in Dermatology, which will last for 3 days, has begun in Samsun. At the symposium, chaired by Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMÜ) Department of Dermatology Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Müge Güler Özden, innovations related to skin cancers and diseases, treatment methods, diagnosis, and strategies for combating these diseases were discussed.

Stating that many innovations were announced to the public thanks to the symposium, Prof. Dr. Müge Güler Özden said, "We are very happy to be together again with faculty members, academics, specialists, and residents from all over Turkey at the 6th Black Sea Symposium on Innovations in Dermatology. We are truly proud of this. Our meeting makes a huge contribution to our region. Moreover, we have the honor of being a meeting that provides free scholarships to specialists participating from the region. Very important topics and very important innovations will be discussed this year. In addition to psoriasis, there have been very important developments in other diseases as well. New developments and new treatments are being discussed at this meeting for patients with allergic eczema and for vitiligo, also known as 'ala' among the public."

Touching upon the spots seen at the base of the nails, Prof. Dr. Özden said, "In the first of our symposium's main topics, we talked about major developments in the treatment of diseases known as boils or 'hidradenitis suppurativa'. This was one of the innovations. Spots on the nails, or rather black streaks, can be a sign of subungual cancer. Just as skin cancer can be seen anywhere on the skin and when we see a mole it should be examined by a dermatologist with computer support, this can also develop at the base of the nail, and a black spot seen at the base of the nail can truly be a precursor to skin cancer that needs to be examined with a computer. While skin cancer is a tumor that can save lives if intervened early, with a 90 percent cure rate, and can be resolved with benign treatment, it is a severe and aggressive tumor that can quickly become fatal if left too late. Therefore, early diagnosis is very important."

Pointing out that there have been major innovations in the treatment and diagnostic methods applied for skin and subungual cancers, Dermatology Specialist Özden said, "I would like to remind patients with psoriasis and allergic eczema once again this year that there have been major developments in their treatments and that they should definitely apply to specialized centers regarding this issue."
