Expert warns: 'If you share your makeup with someone who has an eye infection...'

Stating that many mistakes are made in the use of cosmetic products and that one of them is sharing makeup materials with others, Ophthalmology Specialist Op. Dr. Şermin İpçioğlu said, "If you give your makeup to someone who is suffering from an eye infection, your eye may become infected. Tester products found in stores or common areas can also threaten your eye health."

Pointing out that makeup materials, like every cosmetic product, have a specific shelf life, Op. Dr. İpçioğlu said, "Makeup materials should be used within a certain period after opening. While this period is generally accepted as 3 or 4 months, the duration may vary depending on the nature of the makeup product. Even if the product is not finished, it should be discarded once its shelf life has expired. This is because it has been proven that bacteria grow in almost all makeup products used beyond their expiration date."

Emphasizing that active and preservative substances in makeup materials can cause eye allergies in people with allergic constitutions, Op. Dr. Şermin Ünal İpçioğlu provided the following information:

"If you have an allergic constitution and have purchased multiple cosmetic products, you should try them one by one and continue using the products you are sure do not cause an allergy. When using eyeliner or eye pencils to define the lash line, you should be careful to apply them to the outside of the lashes, not the inner part close to the eye. This is because the Meibomian oil glands, which contribute to tear production, are located on the inner edges of the lashes near the eye. If these glands become clogged during makeup application, the quality of tears decreases, which can lead to discomfort such as stinging, burning, and redness in the eye. Infections such as styes can even develop on the eyelid. When applying eye makeup products such as mascara, pencils, or eyeshadow, the direction of application should be away from the eye. This reduces the risk of tools like brushes or pencils used to apply the products poking the transparent layer (cornea). If a product pokes your eye while applying makeup, you should first wash it with plenty of water, and if the discomfort in the eye persists, you should consult an ophthalmologist."
