Experts warn: Aortic dissection comes silently, symptoms can save lives!
Aortic dissection, which causes the deaths of thousands of people every year, often progresses without symptoms. Experts emphasize that sudden chest and back pain should be taken seriously.
Aortic dissection, a tear in the largest artery emerging from the heart, claims the lives of thousands of people every year. Cardiovascular Surgeon Prof. Dr. Öztekin Oto drew attention to the importance of early diagnosis, stating, "Aortic dissection progresses rapidly; if symptoms are ignored, it can be fatal."
This condition, known as aortic dissection, occurs when the inner layer of the aortic wall tears, allowing blood to flow along the vessel wall. This can obstruct blood flow and threaten vital organs.
BEWARE OF SUDDEN CHEST AND BACK PAIN
The most prominent symptom of the disease is sudden, severe chest, back, or abdominal pain. Prof. Dr. Oto listed the symptoms that may accompany this pain as follows:
-Shortness of breath
-Dizziness, fainting
-Cold sweats
-Severe weakness
Individuals with high blood pressure, vascular diseases, and those with a genetic predisposition are particularly in the risk group.

EARLY INTERVENTION SAVES LIVES
Prof. Dr. Oto stated that individuals over the age of 40 should take these symptoms into account and consult a healthcare facility without delay.
"Aortic dissection requires emergency surgical intervention. With early diagnosis and treatment, the risk of death can be significantly reduced," said Oto, pointing to high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and atherosclerosis as causes of the disease.
PREVENTION IS POSSIBLE
Emphasizing that, apart from genetic predisposition, the risk can be reduced through healthy lifestyle habits, Oto stated, "It is possible to protect against this disease through regular health check-ups as well as by raising awareness in society."
