For those with vitamin D deficiency...

According to a long-term study conducted in the UK, a 19-25 percent increase in the risk of dementia was observed in those with vitamin D deficiency. In those who regularly took vitamin D supplements, a 17 percent reduction in the risk of Alzheimer's and a 14 percent reduction in the risk of vascular dementia were observed.

In the study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, it was determined that in individuals followed for 14 years, the risk of dementia caused by vitamin D deficiency increased to 19-25 percent.

While the research applies to both Alzheimer's and dementia caused by vascular blockage, it also shows that long-term vitamin D deficiency can lead to these conditions.

Stating that individuals should take precautions from an early age to protect themselves against dementia, Neurology Specialist Dr. Nazan Eryiğit offered various suggestions to young people and adults.

SYMPTOMS OF VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY

Pointing out that the risk of dementia increases with age, Neurology Specialist Dr. Nazan Eryiğit stated, “Although we always think of vitamin D in terms of calcium and bones, it is one of the most important causes of forgetfulness, especially in young people. Therefore, we should use vitamin D supplements. One of the subjects that concerns neurology the most is forgetfulness. Fatigue, a constant desire to sleep, body aches despite sleeping, and feeling unrefreshed or unable to get up after resting are symptoms of vitamin D deficiency. Turkey is a very good country in terms of vitamin D. We have constant sun, but we do not sunbathe. We apply sunscreen while sunbathing. The most important source of vitamin D is direct contact with the sun. It should be without protection and direct skin contact,” she explained.

Dr. Nazan Eryiğit said, “Also, we should especially eat oily fish. Perhaps we should take omega-3 supplements, as they contain high amounts of vitamin D. Regular nutrition is also important. Follow a Mediterranean diet, use greens. Because dementia is not caused solely by vitamin D deficiency. B12 and folic acid, meaning all three, must be taken together.”

''UNCONSCIOUS USE OF VITAMIN D IS DANGEROUS''

Stating that “Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, it has toxicity,” Dr. Eryiğit warned, “That is why it is very dangerous to use it unconsciously. They should definitely not start vitamin D supplements without having their doctor perform measurements. Vitamin supplements should not be discontinued until it is said that ‘it has reached a sufficient level.’ We decide on treatment by looking at the serum levels in the blood.”

IMPORTANT WARNINGS

Offering advice to individuals to protect against dementia, Dr. Eryiğit said the following:

“Both mental and physical exercise are very important. In particular, the vitamin D contained in multivitamins is at an extremely low dose and is never sufficient. The patient says, ‘I am taking a complex vitamin anyway,’ and does not go to the doctor. They say, ‘I am already taking it,’ and do not get it measured. However, what they are taking is not even enough for daily consumption. Forgetfulness is a very important complaint. Young or old, it does not matter; if you have forgetfulness, definitely consult a neurology specialist. Please expose yourself to the sun a little. Get vitamin D not only from your hands and face, but also from your arms and legs. Stay in the sun for at least 45 minutes every day. But there should be no glass in between; we want direct exposure.”
