Healing with Melocan herb
Prof. Dr. Aysun Bay Karabulut, a faculty member at Yıldırım Beyazıt University Faculty of Medicine, explained the health benefits of the Melocan herb, known in ancient Greek mythology as 'Diken ucu' (thorn tip).
Karabulut stated that the Melocan herb, used in Turkish cuisine and known as 'diken otu' (thorn herb), helps eliminate toxins from the body and repair cell damage thanks to its blood-purifying properties.
Stating that this herb, which is generally used in salads and pastries in Turkish cuisine, is also a remedy for many ailments in human health, Karabulut said, “Diken otu is a plant with large, thorny leaves and a slightly bitter taste. Generally, the flowers and leaves of this plant are used.
However, there may be regional differences or uncertainty in the names used among the public regarding the naming of the thorn herb as Melocan herb.
It grows in forested areas, streams, and shrublands in the Balkans and in our country, particularly in Düzce and its surrounding regions. It is known by names such as Anadolu saparnası, merucen, zimilaçi, gıcırdak dikeni, kuşevin, öz dikeni, diken ucu, and kırçan meleocan,” she said.
Prof. Dr. Karabulut mentioned that the Melocan herb, which is quite delicious when served as pickles or canned, as well as sautéed with onions, or served over strained yogurt with red pepper, black pepper, sumac, and pure olive oil, also stimulates the salivary glands.
PURIFIES THE BLOOD, GOOD FOR RHEUMATISM
Expressing that the thorn herb is effective in the health field, especially for flu-like infections, induces sweating, and has blood-purifying properties, Prof. Dr. Karabulut said, “It also has antirheumatic and anti-inflammatory properties. The first crops to emerge are used especially in cancer prevention.
Melocan herb is a plant species generally known for its sprouts, roots, and flowers. Thanks to its blood-purifying properties, it helps eliminate toxins from the body and repair cell damage. It also ensures healthy function by regulating the regular operation of internal organs. Widely used for skin diseases, this plant offers regenerative effects known for its blood-purifying properties and can heal skin problems,” she stated.
Stating that the fruit of the Melocan herb also has soothing effects on rheumatism and kidney ailments, Karabulut said, “It can also be used to alleviate psychological problems. However, the Melocan herb, known as the thorn herb, can lead to increased salivation and may cause diarrhea when consumed in excess. In the past, it is known that the Melocan herb was used in the treatment of syphilis.
Syphilis is a serious systemic disease caused by a germ called Treponema Pallidum, and it is believed that the Melocan herb is effective in treating this disease.
However, one should be careful before using herbal treatments and consult a professional health expert, because the effects of plants can vary from person to person and may cause side effects,” she said.
