Health alert: Chile introduces mandatory mask-wearing
Rising respiratory viruses in Chile have brought new restrictions. The country has made mask-wearing mandatory to combat viruses, with the measure announced to remain in effect until August 31.
The Chilean Ministry of Health (Minsal), which has declared a health alert, has made mask-wearing mandatory in designated areas starting April 15 to curb the rise in respiratory viruses.
Authorities noted that the measures were taken in response to the increase in viral circulation observed since March, particularly regarding rhinovirus, COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus, and influenza.
The locations where the mask mandate has been introduced nationwide include all emergency care units and facilities, as well as public and private spaces. The mask requirement, which will last until August 31, could be extended if health conditions do not improve. In the event that the viruses show dangerous mutations or cases increase, the mask mandate will be expanded to cover supermarkets, shopping malls, and public transportation areas. While mask-wearing remains optional in educational institutions and workplaces, health officials aim to control the spread of the outbreak with these measures.
