Important advice from an expert for those with a herniated disc

Although cold weather does not cause a herniated disc, it is among the factors that trigger back pain. Providing explanations and warnings on the subject, brain and neurosurgery specialist Op. Dr. Emre Ünal advised those with a herniated disc or back pain to keep their lower back area warm during cold weather.

Emphasizing the importance of wearing clothes that keep the lower back area warm in cold weather, Ünal explained that the first thing to do for back pain is to 'apply a hot water bottle to the lower back area for at least 15 minutes and rest.'

Noting that a herniated disc occurs when the cartilage tissues called 'discs' located between the spinal bones deteriorate over time and slip out of place, Ünal mentioned that this deterioration is caused by factors such as 'advancing age, heavy lifting, smoking, and being overweight.'

MOBILITY DECREASES

Ünal noted that in cold weather, tissues, muscles, joints, and connective tissues shrink and harden, pointing out that in this state, less blood reaches the tissues, which reduces mobility and causes tension in the muscles, joints, and connective tissues in the lower back area, leading to pain.

Op. Dr. Emre Ünal underlined that people suffering from a herniated disc experience more hip and leg pain than lower back pain, stating, 'While cold weather does not contribute to the development of a herniated disc, we observe in our clinics that the pain caused by a herniated disc becomes more severe in cold weather.'

Offering suggestions to protect against back pain or a herniated disc, Ünal stated that 'regular exercise, paying attention to weight, staying away from sugary foods, not smoking, and protecting the lower back area from the cold' are important.
