In prison despite serious health problems! 'Mahir Polat' call from the Istanbul Medical Chamber

The Istanbul Medical Chamber has called for the release of Mahir Polat, Deputy Secretary General of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB), who is being held at Marmara Prison in Silivri. Recalling that Polat was referred to the Council of Forensic Medicine yesterday (Monday, April 7) due to his health problems, it was stated that the report should be released as soon as possible.

In a statement made by the Istanbul Medical Chamber, it was said, "Our opinion remains that it is difficult to continue the follow-up and treatment of Mahir Polat in a penal institution, and therefore, it would be appropriate for the detainee to be released, taking into account his right to access health services."

"POLAT'S HEALTH CONDITION IS BEING MONITORED BY US"

The full statement made by the Istanbul Medical Chamber is as follows:

"Developments regarding the current health status of Mahir Polat, who is known to have many chronic health problems, are being closely monitored by us through information provided by his lawyers.

Previous reports, epicrises, etc., regarding Mahir Polat's illnesses have been examined by us, and on Friday, March 28, the Public Prosecutor's Office was informed that 'the available information reveals the difficulty of continuing Mahir Polat's follow-up and treatment in a penal institution, and therefore, with our opinion that it would be appropriate for the detainee to be released, taking into account his right to access health services; if there is any hesitation to the contrary, Mahir Polat could be examined by an independent committee to be formed by our professional chamber and a medical report could be issued.'

On the same day, Mahir Polat's lawyers were informed that a decision had been made to transfer the detainee to a full-fledged hospital, but it was stated that this would be done after the holiday break. Before the transfer to a full-fledged hospital could take place, Mahir Polat was rushed to Mehmet Akif Ersoy Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Training and Research Hospital on Sunday, March 30, where he underwent a coronary angiography procedure the next day and was sent back to Marmara Closed Penal Institution one day later."

"HE MUST BE RELEASED"

For Mahir Polat, who was not transferred to a full-fledged hospital during the extended holiday, a decision was requested from the Council of Forensic Medicine by a committee of physicians working at the hospital within the prison campus regarding whether his health condition is suitable for prison conditions. It is expected that such a determination will be made as a result of the evaluation conducted by the Council of Forensic Medicine on Monday, April 7.

As the Istanbul Medical Chamber, our opinion, which we also conveyed to the Public Prosecutor's Office, that 'it is difficult to continue the follow-up and treatment of Mahir Polat in a penal institution, and therefore it would be appropriate for the detainee to be released, taking into account his right to access health services,' remains unchanged.

We demand that the result of the evaluation conducted at the Council of Forensic Medicine on Monday, April 7, to determine whether the health condition of Mahir Polat, who is kept in prison despite significant health problems and subjected to repeated transfers under conditions likely to negatively affect his health, is suitable for prison conditions, be announced as soon as possible."
