Increase in hypertension-related deaths

Stating that hypertension is a condition where either systolic (upper) or diastolic (lower) blood pressure values are higher than expected, Specialist Dr. Alirıza Erbay said, "In our country, hypertension affects 1 in every 3 adults. This rate is 2 in every 5 people over the age of 65."

Increase in hypertension-related deaths

Specialist Dr. Alirıza Erbay provided information about hypertension. Emphasizing that the number of patients with hypertension worldwide has nearly doubled from 1990 to 2019, Specialist Dr. Alirıza Erbay announced that 648 million people were recorded as hypertension patients in 1990, and 1 billion 278 million in 2019.

"RESPONSIBLE FOR 14 PERCENT OF DEATHS"

Stating that hypertension is a serious disease, Specialist Dr. Erbay said, "Hypertension is the cause of approximately 14 percent of all deaths."

Stating that a diagnosis of hypertension should not be made immediately if hospital and office/workplace measurements are high, Specialist Dr. Erbay said, "We should monitor blood pressure for 24 hours by attaching an ambulatory blood pressure monitoring device and re-evaluate."

ELDERLY AND PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD BE CAREFUL

Stating that the blood pressure values at which treatment is initiated are higher for those over 80 and during pregnancy, Specialist Dr. Erbay said, "The values for starting treatment are lower in cardiovascular disease, heart failure, and chronic kidney failure."

EXPLAINED THE TARGET VALUE FOR BLOOD PRESSURE

Emphasizing that lowering blood pressure is the main goal of treatment, Specialist Dr. Erbay stated, "The target value should be 140/90 or lower, only in patients with high blood pressure."

Stating that general lifestyle changes should definitely be recommended, Specialist Dr. Erbay said, "Reduce your weight, increase physical activity, limit salt, lower blood fats-cholesterol, reduce alcohol, quit smoking, and increase fruit and vegetable intake."

Specialist Dr. Erbay concluded his words by saying, "Finally, the terms high blood pressure, blood pressure disease, hypertension, and supertension all refer to the same condition."
