Expert explains! What happens if strabismus is not treated?
It is known that strabismus is not just an aesthetic issue, but can also lead to amblyopia (lazy eye) and psychological problems. Eye Health and Diseases Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burak Bilgin stated that treatment for strabismus is possible and provided information on the subject. Bilgin said, "Amblyopia can also occur in untreated cases of strabismus."
Gaziantep Private Hatem Hospital Eye Health and Diseases Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burak Bilgin stated that treatment for strabismus is possible and provided information on the subject.
Providing information about strabismus, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bilgin noted that the condition can arise for various reasons, stating, “The primary symptom of the disease is that when looking at a point, one eye is straight while the other deviates to a different angle. Six muscles attached to the eyeball control the movements of the eye by receiving signals from the brain.
When a problem occurs in the control of these movements, one eye looks straight ahead while the other eye drifts upward, downward, inward, or outward. The deviation can occur throughout the day, or it may appear especially when the person is tired, ill, or has been performing near-vision tasks such as reading for a long time. The deviation may be constant in one eye or may alternate between eyes,” he said.
'EARLY DIAGNOSIS IS IMPORTANT'
Emphasizing that early diagnosis is important in cases of strabismus, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bilgin said, “In some types of childhood strabismus, complete treatment can be achieved through the use of glasses. Therefore, the first step of treatment is to accurately identify and correct the need for glasses in the child. In cases accompanied by amblyopia, it may be necessary to apply eye patching therapy along with glasses.
In some types of strabismus, surgical treatment is planned to align the eyes with each other. Since all treatment methods applied for strabismus have higher success rates during childhood, it is very important to diagnose the disease early and begin treatment,” he stated.
'IF STRABISMUS IS NOT TREATED...'
Underlining that sudden onset of eye deviation is very important and can be the first sign of intraocular or intracranial masses, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bilgin said, “If strabismus is not treated, the brain suppresses the image from one of the eyes, and double vision may occur. In untreated strabismus, stereopsis and binocular vision, which is the ability of both eyes to see together, are hindered. Consequently, amblyopia may also occur,” he added.
