Istanbul's most active district has been identified
While the rate of physical activity in Istanbul is increasing, Tuzla has emerged as the most active district. According to the 2024 research by IMM Spor Istanbul, the mobility rate in Istanbul has reached 37.1 percent.
The 2024 Physical Activity Research, conducted by Spor Istanbul, a subsidiary of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), revealed that Istanbul's physical activity rate increased by 2.2 points compared to 2023, rising to 37.1 percent. In 2020, this rate was only at the 13.2 percent level. The research was carried out through face-to-face interviews and household visits with a total of 11 thousand 534 people across 39 districts.
Tuzla was identified as the most active district in Istanbul with a mobility rate of 52.6 percent. Tuzla Mayor Eren Ali Bingöl stated that this success is a result of the sports vision established in the district, saying, "This success is not just a statistic; it is an investment in the future of Tuzla." Bingöl expressed that they aim to raise active individuals through various sports events and educational support organized in the district.
ISTANBUL'S MOBILITY RATE IS INCREASING
IMM Spor Istanbul General Manager Prof. Dr. Bilge Donuk stated that the research was conducted with a large sample group and that Istanbul's physical activity level was presented in detail according to districts, gender, and age groups. Donuk said, "Istanbul's mobility level is rising, but the distance we still need to cover is quite long." Emphasizing that these rates are over 50 percent in European cities, Donuk drew attention to the importance of increasing access to physical activity.
The research showed that Istanbul residents prefer walking the most. While walking is the most popular type of exercise at a rate of 58 percent, it is followed by fitness, swimming, and football. While 59 percent of Istanbul residents stated the reason for exercising as "feeling fitter," 35.8 percent stated that they exercise to improve their physical appearance.
SPORTS HABITS OF YOUNG PEOPLE
According to the research, 64.6 percent of Istanbul residents prefer to exercise in parks and open spaces. Young people, on the other hand, use gyms the most. As age increases, the tendency to exercise in open spaces increases. In addition to Tuzla, Beyoğlu and Küçükçekmece were also among the districts that stood out with their mobility rates.
