Japan advises adults: 'Do not sleep less than 6 hours'
The Japanese government has advised adults suffering from sleep deprivation to get at least 6 hours of sleep per night.
A study by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare revealed that 37.5 percent of men and 40.6 percent of women across the country sleep an average of less than 6 hours per day.
In a draft recommendation report announced this week, the Ministry advised adults to sleep at least 6 hours per night to improve the duration and quality of their sleep.
In the report, where sleep durations were described as "alarming," the recommended sleep duration varies by age group.
Accordingly, 11-14 hours of sleep were recommended for the 1-2 age range, 10-13 hours for the 3-5 age range, 9-12 hours for primary school students, and 8-10 hours for high school and university students.
The Ministry will finalize the report, which was shared with the public this week, by the end of the year.
A 2021 OECD study also revealed that the public in Japan sleeps an average of 7 hours and 22 minutes.
This rate was the shortest sleep duration among 33 countries.
Experts argue that 6-8 hours of sleep per day is ideal for adults, as those who sleep 7 hours a day have the lowest risk of ailments such as depression, cancer, and heart palpitations.
