Ministry of Health issues 'skin cancer' warning

According to information received from Ministry of Health officials, skin cancers are primarily seen in three types: "basal cell carcinoma (BCC)," "squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)," and "melanoma."

BCC and SCC, which are among the most common types of skin cancer, generally occur in areas exposed to the sun. Melanoma is known as the most dangerous type of skin cancer.

Stating that an increase in skin cancer cases may be observed in recent years due to the impact of deteriorating environmental factors, officials drew attention to the vital importance of early diagnosis in skin cancer and recommend that citizens develop the habit of checking their skin regularly.

A warning is issued to consult a doctor if one notices new spots on the skin or changes in existing freckles or moles.

Explaining that moles on the body are generally harmless, officials recommend consulting a doctor if one of these moles looks different or if a new mole appears after the age of 25.

HOW SHOULD PRECAUTIONS BE TAKEN?

Ministry officials listed the precautions that should be taken to protect against skin cancers as follows:

"Reduce the time spent exposed to the sun. Avoid being outdoors between 11:00 and 15:00 when the sun is intense. Apply sunscreen to exposed skin areas 30 minutes before going out in the sun and repeat every 2-3 hours. Protect your skin by using tightly woven clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-protected sunglasses. Shade is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect yourself from the sun. Therefore, stay in the shade."

It is stated that citizens can significantly reduce the risk of skin cancer by taking these precautions and protecting themselves from the sun, especially during the summer months.
