Music contributes to the development of children's mathematical intelligence
Trakya University (TÜ) Faculty of Medicine, Department of Physiology Head Prof. Dr. Levent Öztürk said, "Current scientific research methods show that the mathematical capacity of people who engage with music increases. Therefore, if we want our child to be successful in the fields of mathematics and science, we must connect them with music."
Trakya University (TÜ) Faculty of Medicine, Department of Physiology Head Prof. Dr. Levent Öztürk stated that music contributes to the development of children's mathematical intelligence.
Within the scope of the "Music Academy" program organized for teachers by the Edirne Provincial Directorate of National Education, a "Music Therapy" lesson was held at the Edirne State Turkish Music and Rumelian Music Ensemble building.
Prof. Dr. Öztürk, who is also the President of the Applied Music Therapies Association (UMTED), stated in his speech at the program that music positively affects human health and brain development.
Expressing that signals go directly to the brain when listening to music, Öztürk said, "Research shows that our brain lights up when we are engaged with music. We aim to benefit from these effects in a therapy setting."
Öztürk pointed out that humans live intertwined with music and are particularly affected by upbeat music.
''IF WE WANT OUR CHILD TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE...''
Öztürk noted the following:
"Music therapy practices encompass many different methods. The brain can take and use rhythms; the brain can be activated by music. With this activation, the brain can regain some of its lost capacities. Engaging with music improves a person's mathematical intelligence. When our children are interested in music, we sometimes try to discourage them by saying, 'What are you going to do, are you going to be a singer?' However, we see that all the great mathematicians of the past were interested in music. Current scientific research methods show that the mathematical capacity of people who engage with music increases. Therefore, if we want our child to be successful in the fields of mathematics and science, we must connect them with music."
