Mysterious pneumonia cases on the rise in China

The mysterious pneumonia that has been spreading rapidly among children in China in recent days, and has also been observed in some European countries, has raised questions about whether there is a 'new virus'.

According to AA, a report shared on November 21 on ProMed, the disease reporting network of the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID), stated that there was "extreme overcrowding" in children's hospitals in the capital Beijing and the northern Liaoning province due to "undiagnosed" pneumonia-like cases.

Dr. Stephan Gibson, in a message shared on the ProMed network, assessed that while "mycoplasma pneumonia," a bacterial respiratory infection, typically presents with coughing as the primary symptom, children might instead exhibit upper respiratory tract symptoms, nausea, and vomiting. On the other hand, Gibson pointed out that "burning-type infiltrations" are seen in the respiratory tracts in mycoplasma pneumonia, and that the inflammation findings observed in lung X-rays in these cases constitute an anomaly.

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced in a statement today that it has requested official information from China regarding the undiagnosed pneumonia cases in children.
