New blood test could enable rapid cancer detection

Researchers have found that the very low-cost LINE-1-ORF1p test can detect a specific protein that identifies multiple cancers before symptoms appear.

Unlike cancer tests that rely on tissue sampling or are limited to a single type of disease, it was stated that the new diagnostic is low-cost and capable of detecting different types of cancer.

Professor Michael Rout from Rockefeller University said: “The test has groundbreaking potential as an early detection test for lethal cancers. Such ultra-sensitive detection devices are poised to improve patient outcomes in transformative ways.”

Dr. Martin Taylor from Massachusetts General Hospital added, “We were shocked at how well this test performed across cancer types.”

LINE-1-ORF1p emerged as a cancer biomarker that came onto scientists' radar about 10 years ago after researchers discovered that the protein was higher in most human cancer patients.

Researchers have now developed a test that can look for the protein in the blood. They concluded that this test is the most important product for early diagnosis when diseases are more treatable.
