Nutritional tips for New Year's morning
New Year's morning nutrition can vary depending on personal preferences, cultural habits, and health status. However, it is necessary to opt for a light breakfast to balance out the difficult-to-digest and fatty foods consumed the previous day.
After New Year's feasts featuring a variety of dishes, many people may experience digestive issues such as bloating and indigestion.
Excessive consumption of food and drinks can lead to edema in the body. There are ways to overcome both digestive problems and edema.
Dietitian Dilara Durak from the Nutrition and Diet Department at Medicana Kadıköy Hospital provided nutritional recommendations for New Year's morning.
Dietitian Dilara Durak listed her recommendations as follows:
Drink water: Alcohol consumption on New Year's Eve can cause dehydration and edema. Drinking water sip by sip throughout the day will help with the edema from the previous day. Drinking lemon water can support digestion.
Light and easy-to-digest foods: If heavy meals were consumed on New Year's Eve, choose light and easy-to-digest foods the next day. Foods such as fiber-rich vegetables, soup, and yogurt can assist the digestive system. Avoid carbohydrate-heavy foods the day after New Year's.
Fruit consumption: Fiber-rich fruits can regulate digestion and provide energy. Fruits such as pineapple, blueberries, apples, and pears can be good options.
Oatmeal or muesli: You can support your carbohydrate intake with foods that facilitate digestion, such as oatmeal, due to its fiber content. It can be consumed with milk or yogurt.
Ginger tea: Ginger tea can soothe digestion and calm the stomach. A tea prepared by adding fresh ginger slices to boiling water can be a good option.
Protein sources: Light protein sources such as eggs, chicken, or fish provide energy without weighing down digestion.
Fresh vegetables: If heavy, fatty foods were consumed on New Year's Eve, eating fresh vegetables the next day can facilitate digestion.
Yogurt: Yogurt containing probiotics can support the digestive system and alleviate stomach discomfort.
Apple cider vinegar: If you add organic apple cider vinegar to half a glass of water and drink it on New Year's morning, it may help with heartburn and indigestion. It facilitates digestion and absorption.
Watch out for caffeine and sugar content: Limit drinks containing excessive caffeine and sugar, as these substances can affect the digestive system. Try to drink your tea or coffee without sugar if possible.
