New research: One in every 8 women develops breast cancer

Medical Oncology Specialist Muhammet Ali Kaplan, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, stated, "While breast cancer was previously seen in 1 out of every 12 women, it now affects 1 in every 8 women, which is an incidence rate of around 12.5 percent."

In Diyarbakır, doctors discussed and evaluated the latest developments in breast cancer during a meeting held at a hotel for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Memorial Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Muhammet Ali Kaplan recommended that women over the age of 40 undergo mammography screenings, noting that the probability of a woman developing breast cancer by the age of 80 is around 12 percent.

'THEY MUST CONSULT A DOCTOR'

Stating that breast cancer treatment has achieved significant success with the addition of smart drugs and new-generation therapies, Prof. Dr. Kaplan said, "Regardless of whether they have a family history of breast cancer, we want all our women to have their mammography screenings done at regular intervals through KETEM centers. Because early diagnosis provides our patients with the opportunity to completely recover from this cancer.

Furthermore, if patients, whether they have been screened or not, detect any findings in their breasts, we strongly recommend that they consult a doctor. Among these findings, asymmetry between the two breasts, loss of symmetry, feeling a lump in the breast, retraction of the nipple, or bloody discharge are all complaints that should alert our women and lead them to a doctor, and these are findings that strengthen our hand in terms of early diagnosis," he said.

'TREATMENT MUST BE SCRUTINIZED'

Pointing out that breast cancer was previously seen in 1 out of every 12 women and now has an incidence rate of 1 in every 8 women, or around 12.5 percent, Prof. Dr. Kaplan said, "The probability of a woman developing breast cancer at some point in her life up to the age of 80 is 12 percent. It is of great importance to us that the diagnosis and treatment of a disease seen at such a significant level are thoroughly scrutinized and that awareness meetings are held.

In patients diagnosed with breast cancer, the use of smart drugs in addition to surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and hormone therapies in the early stages has significantly increased success in breast cancer treatment," he said.

Stating that the burden of chemotherapy has gradually begun to disappear in breast cancer in recent times, Dr. Kaplan said, "We now see that treatments such as smart drugs, targeted therapies, and immunotherapies are being used very intensively in breast cancer treatments. It is worth noting that the addition of these treatments to chemotherapy has brought treatment success rates to very significant levels," he added.
