Onlookers couldn't believe their eyes: 10-kilogram giant tumor removed!
A patient who went to the hospital complaining of abdominal pain and swelling has regained their health following a successful surgery to remove a 10-kilogram, 38-centimeter giant tumor.
64-year-old H.G., who lives in Balıkesir, visited a hospital complaining of abdominal pain and swelling. Following examinations, it was stated that the elderly woman had suffered a stomach hemorrhage.
She experienced her first shock when she was referred to Izmir Katip Celebi University Atatürk Training and Research Hospital for advanced treatment.
A CT scan performed there revealed that H.G. had a tumor approximately 10 kilograms in weight, 38 centimeters in height, and 26 centimeters in width, extending from the very bottom of her abdomen to below her heart.
The giant tumor was successfully removed in an operation performed by General Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Osman Nuri Dilek and his team.
''OUR PATIENT CAME TO US WITH COMPLAINTS OF ABDOMINAL PAIN AND SWELLING''
Providing information about the surgery, General Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Osman Nuri Dilek said, “Our patient came to us from Balıkesir with complaints of abdominal pain and swelling. She had been examined there due to a stomach hemorrhage and was referred to us for further treatment. When the patient arrived, she was weak, tired, and anemic. We immediately requested a CT scan. There was a palpable mass in her abdomen. She had a very large mass, approximately 38x29 centimeters, extending from what we call the pelvis, the very bottom of the abdomen, to below the heart. We made our preparations thinking it would be a malignant tumor. We prepared the patient for surgery within a few days and performed the operation,” he stated.
''A VERY RARE CASE''
Emphasizing that this is a rare case in medical literature, Prof. Dr. Dilek noted:
“It was a difficult surgery. We went into the surgery with blood supplies ready. We had thought beforehand that it originated from the stomach, but it was hard to believe. Because it was a very large mass for such a tumor to develop from the stomach.”
''WE REMOVED THE ENTIRE STOMACH''
Explaining that a large incision was made in the abdomen due to the massive size of the mass and that it was removed along with the spleen, Dilek said, “The mass was intertwined with the spleen. It had adhered to the diaphragm, and we removed it along with the diaphragm. We removed the entire stomach. We completed our surgery by creating a new path between the intestine and the esophagus. It was a surgery that lasted approximately 4 hours,” he added.
Stating that the patient's condition is currently good and that they hope for further improvement, Dilek said they expect the patient to be discharged within 7 days.
''THANKS TO THE PATHOLOGY RESULT, THE PATIENT WILL BE ABLE TO RECEIVE TREATMENT''
Providing information about the examination process after the mass was taken to the pathology laboratory, Prof. Dr. İzzetiye Ebru Çakır said, “A mass measuring 38x29x13 centimeters and weighing 10 kilograms arrived at our laboratory. Thanks to the pathology result, our patient will be able to receive her treatment. However, these procedures in pathology continue for about 3 weeks. All materials removed surgically must undergo pathological examination. This type of intra-abdominal mass could be a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) originating from the stomach, or it could be other mesenchymal tumors such as dedifferentiated liposarcoma,” she said.
