Pay attention to family attitudes during exam anxiety periods!
Psychologist and Psychotherapist Sümeyye Bilici, who provides guidance on how families should behave toward students experiencing anxiety during exam periods, said, 'First of all, allow your child to share their feelings and listen to them without judgment. A child can only face their emotions if there is a parent in front of them who listens. Furthermore, being understanding and acting patiently during this period is very important.'
Psychologist and Psychotherapist Sümeyye Bilici, co-founder of the Psikojen Academy and Psychological Counseling Center, made statements regarding how family attitudes should be during the exam anxiety period.
Drawing attention to the anxiety of students during the exam period, Bilici said, 'Exam anxiety is a significant problem that negatively affects students' academic success. Students have trouble tolerating the intense stress and worry they experience before, during, or after an exam. This situation causes them to be unable to answer questions they would normally be able to solve simply because they are in an exam setting. The resulting anxiety causes students to sabotage themselves physically, emotionally, and mentally. In this process, the greatest supporters of students who struggle to manage their anxiety are undoubtedly their parents.'
'BEING UNDERSTANDING AND ACTING PATIENTLY IS VERY IMPORTANT'
Explaining what families should do during the exam period to manage exam anxiety, Bilici stated, 'First of all, allow your child to share their feelings and listen to them without judgment. A child can only face their emotions if there is a parent in front of them who listens. Furthermore, being understanding and acting patiently during this period is very important. Along with this, families should teach their children that anxiety is normal, but that managing it is in their own hands,' she said.
BEING ABLE TO APPRECIATE
Bilici continued her words as follows: 'Success multiplies as it is appreciated. Remind them how valuable everything they put effort into is, and that true success lies in being dedicated on the path toward the goal.'
A SUPPORTIVE AND SAFE FAMILY ENVIRONMENT
Feeling safe and supported while students struggle with their anxiety helps them manage this anxiety. By providing a positive home environment, families can nurture positive emotions during this process that needs to be managed correctly. Also, stay away from destructive criticism and attitudes that will damage children's self-esteem.
SETTING REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS
Every child's capacity and abilities are different; therefore, it is necessary to provide support by considering their individual characteristics. Families' expectations of their children must be realistic. Excessive expectations can increase the pressure on the student and lead to anxiety.
GETTING PROFESSIONAL HELP
If exam anxiety reaches very high levels and negatively affects your child's daily life, it is important to get professional help. By receiving support from a psychologist, the management of anxiety can be learned.
Remember, the exam is temporary, but what you make your child feel during this process is permanent.'
