Poisoning reports linked to weight-loss injections in the Netherlands nearly doubled in one year

A significant increase has been recorded in health problems linked to the unsupervised use of weight-loss injections in the Netherlands. According to the Dutch public broadcaster NOS, data from the Dutch National Poisons Information Center showed that the number of reports linked to these drugs rose from 76 in 2024 to 149 in 2025.

Authorities noted that not all cases are reported to official bodies, pointing out that the actual number could be higher. It was stated that a significant portion of the reports is associated with use without a prescription or outside of medical supervision.

According to the data, approximately 40 percent of the cases are linked to obtaining weight-loss injections outside of official healthcare channels. Experts emphasized that this situation points to a growing unregulated market and that using the drugs without medical supervision increases the risks.

The warnings stated that the transition from supervised use to individual use, in particular, increases the likelihood of incorrect dosing and side effects. It was noted that overdose or incorrect use can lead to acute symptoms requiring emergency medical intervention.

Experts also warned about potential long-term damage to the liver, kidneys, and nervous system. Health authorities remind that such drugs should only be used under physician evaluation and appropriate monitoring.
