Raw dairy products recalled in Northern Ireland due to health risk
In Northern Ireland, raw dairy products are being recalled from the market due to suspected E. coli contamination. Experts have issued warnings that these products should not be consumed.
A farm shop in Northern Ireland has decided to recall raw dairy products due to a situation threatening public health. Kenneth Hanna’s Farm Shop has taken this step over concerns that Ken's Raw Jersey Milk brand milk may be contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) bacteria. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has informed consumers that they should absolutely not drink this milk or use it in the production of dairy products. Those who have purchased the product are advised to return it to the store where it was bought or to discard it.
The recall covers all expiration dates and batch codes of the product. Because raw milk does not undergo any heat treatment, it carries microbiological risks.
SYMPTOMS OF STEC INFECTION
Authorities warn that STEC infection can lead to serious health problems. Severe consequences such as bloody diarrhea, intense abdominal pain, and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can result in kidney failure, may occur. Young children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to these bacteria. The FSA stated that individuals showing these symptoms should stay away from crowded environments for at least 48 hours to prevent the risk of transmission to others.
GROWING CONCERNS OVER FOOD SAFETY
This development follows the recent recall of bags of macadamia nuts due to suspected E. coli. The increasing number of recalls in the fight against foodborne infections serves as a reminder once again that caution should be exercised, especially in the consumption of raw or undercooked products. STEC bacteria are usually transmitted through raw milk, undercooked ground meat, and vegetables that have not been sufficiently sanitized. Individuals with weakened immune systems are advised to stay away from such products.
