"Regular tooth brushing protects against pneumonia"
A comprehensive study conducted at Harvard University in Boston, USA, has revealed that regular tooth brushing provides effective protection against lung diseases.
In a study conducted by Selina Ehrenzeller and Michael Klompas, experts in infectious diseases at Harvard University in Boston, USA, the analysis of data from more than 2,700 patients proved that oral and dental health is directly linked to lung diseases and that regular tooth brushing is among the ways to protect against pneumonia.
Providing informative statements on the subject, Periodontist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Onurcem Duruel stated, “Especially in recent years, the relationship between the oral environment, which has a direct connection to the respiratory tract and respiratory system, and respiratory diseases has been examined in detail. As a result of the studies conducted, it has been confirmed that regular tooth brushing prevents gum diseases and reduces the risk of hospitalization due to severe pneumonia.”
It is proven by various studies that dental and gum diseases are closely related to lung diseases. Faculty Member Periodontist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Onurcem Duruel stated that this identified mutual relationship involves various biochemical and microbiological mechanisms.
Duruel continued his speech as follows:
“As a result of poor oral hygiene, bacteria in the oral flora multiply and increase the risk of pneumonia. When done regularly, daily tooth cleaning can prevent bacteria or other harmful microbes from passing down the throat and causing lung infections such as pneumonia. It is known that as a result of daily tooth brushing, the bacteria that cause gum disease and the risk of lung infection are reduced.”
Emphasizing that one should not forget that oral health is directly related to overall body health, Duruel said, “For this reason, it is important to maintain simple and effective habits such as brushing teeth twice a day, using dental floss, regular doctor check-ups, and healthy nutrition throughout life.”
