Risk of heatstroke and stroke increases during summer months

Neurology Specialist Dr. Ufuk Sandıkçı provided important information regarding heatstroke and stroke.

"YOU SHOULD NOT BE OUTDOORS BETWEEN 11:00 AND 16:00"

Emphasizing that taking precautions to protect against stroke and heatstroke is of vital importance, Dr. Sandıkçı stated, "Among these precautions, maintaining a good fluid-electrolyte balance is paramount. Meeting daily fluid needs regularly and spreading this intake evenly throughout the day is of great importance. Furthermore, it is necessary to avoid humid and very hot environments and, in particular, to not be outdoors between 11:00 and 16:00, when the sun is at its most intense."

EMPHASIZED THE IMPORTANCE OF CLOTHING CHOICE

Stating that clothing choice also plays a critical role in protection during hot weather, Dr. Sandıkçı said, "During the summer months, light-colored clothing suitable for the season should be preferred. This way, the body is less affected by the hot weather, and the risk of heatstroke is reduced. The importance of individuals in the risk group using their doctor-prescribed medications regularly cannot be denied."

"YOU SHOULD BATHE DURING THE DAY"

Stating that bathing during the day and keeping the body hydrated is also an effective method for protection against heatstroke, Dr. Sandıkçı expressed, "In this way, body temperature can be lowered, and the negative effects of hot weather can be minimized."

HOW TO PROTECT AGAINST HEATSTROKE?

Issuing warnings about raising public awareness and taking necessary precautions, especially during the hot summer months, Dr. Sandıkçı listed the measures that can be taken to protect against stroke and heatstroke as follows:

"High fluid consumption: Consumption of beverages that will maintain electrolyte balance, especially water, should be increased.

Staying in shaded areas: It is important to stay in the shade as much as possible and not be exposed to direct sunlight.

Light exercises: Heavy physical activities should be avoided, and light-paced walks should be preferred.

Cooling methods: Cooling devices such as air conditioners or fans can be used."

Stating that it is possible to minimize the risks of stroke and heatstroke during the summer months with these simple but effective precautions, Dr. Sandıkçı warned, "Do not neglect to take the necessary measures to protect your health."
