Scientists warn: Mobile phones reduce sperm count
The study was published in the peer-reviewed medical journal Fertility and Sterility
Sperm count is important for those who want to have children. This is because if the sperm count falls below 40 million per milliliter, the chances of a woman becoming pregnant decrease.
Swiss scientists say that men who frequently use their mobile phones throughout the day have a lower sperm count compared to those who use them once a week.
In the study published on October 31 in the peer-reviewed medical journal Fertility and Sterility, researchers asked 2,886 men recruited for military service between 2005 and 2018 to track their mobile phone usage and sperm counts.
According to the report in Independent Türkçe, it was stated that the sperm count of men who used their mobile phones at least 20 times a day was an average of 44.5 million per milliliter.
However, according to the research, it was observed that the effect on sperm count began to decrease as technology developed over the 13-year study period.
The study found that phones using 2G and 3G had the greatest impact on sperm count compared to the latest 4G and 5G technology.
Prof. Allan Pacey from the University of Manchester, who was not involved in the study, stated, "The observation that 2G and 3G phones had the greatest impact confused me. This is not something I can explain."
Mobile phones have an electromagnetic field that emits low-level radiofrequency.
According to the research, if mobile phones emit maximum radiofrequency, the surrounding tissue can heat up by up to 0.5 degrees Celsius.
On the other hand, scientists stated that the location where the phone is carried has no effect.
