A solution for cerebral palsy: Botox treatment

Addressing "cerebral palsy," a physical disability that affects muscle movement or the posture of the skeletal system in the human body, Acıbadem Kayseri Hospital Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialist Dr. Ayşe Şener Boduç stated that factors during pregnancy and birth are among the most common causes of the condition.

Emphasizing that cerebral palsy causes loss of motor function, posture, and movement disorders due to damage in the brain, Dr. Boduç explained that the symptoms of cerebral palsy vary depending on which region of the brain is damaged and how widespread it is; therefore, while some patients may experience mild walking difficulties, others may be forced to use a wheelchair.

'OFTEN THE CAUSE OF THE DISEASE CANNOT BE FOUND'

Stating that the incidence of the disease varies by society but is seen in 1.5 to 3 out of every thousand babies, Dr. Boduç said, "Diagnosis is made through history, physical examination, and supportive laboratory tests. Although the cause of the disease often cannot be found, some of the most well-known causes include factors during pregnancy and birth. These factors include premature birth, uncontrolled hypertension in the pregnant mother, and bleeding or infections during pregnancy."

Dr. Boduç pointed out that the baby being deprived of oxygen and severe inflammatory diseases contracted after birth can also cause cerebral palsy, adding, "The baby being deprived of oxygen during or after birth, or severe inflammatory diseases and head trauma after birth, can lead to cerebral palsy.

If a child's movement development is behind their peers, for example, if they sat, crawled, or started walking later than usual; or if their posture, sitting, or movements are different from normal, they must be seen by a physician.

We frequently see spasticity/muscle stiffness in cerebral palsy. Muscle stiffness negatively affects functions. Although brain damage is not progressive, we observe a clinical picture where musculoskeletal problems progress with age. Spasticity makes a significant contribution to this progression. If muscle stiffness is not actively treated, it can lead to functional impairment and contractures," she stated.

'EFFECTIVE IN PROTECTING IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS'

Underlining that the Botox treatment applied for the disease is an effective method, especially for protecting functions, Dr. Boduç said, "In addition to physical therapy, Botox injections, selective dorsal rhizotomy, intrathecal baclofen pumps, and nerve blocks are used to reduce spasticity. Botox application is quite effective in patients with indications. Botox is highly effective in preventing contractures, reducing pain, facilitating care, easing bracing, serial casting, and positioning, and most importantly, in protecting functions," she said.

Emphasizing the importance of regular follow-up for patients diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Dr. Boduç stated that a child with cerebral palsy can improve many of their skills with the support treatments of modern medicine and that these children can be integrated into society.
