The 10 most effective ways to protect yourself from the sun
Summer is here. Temperatures have risen significantly. We have a long summer season ahead of us. It is vital to pay attention to certain rules to protect yourself from the scorching effects of the sun.
While summer months are a time to enjoy the sun, it is important not to forget the harmful effects of solar radiation. Excessive sun exposure can lead not only to skin aging but also to skin cancer. Dermatology Specialist Dr. Didem Kazan lists the basic precautions that can be taken to protect against the sun's harms:
1. Use Sunscreen
Sunscreens that provide at least SPF 30 or higher protection play an important role in preventing skin cancer. It should be applied especially half an hour before going outside and reapplied every 2-3 hours.
2. Prefer Creams Containing Physical Filters
Creams containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide physically reflect sun rays and are not absorbed by the skin. Therefore, they are safer for children, pregnant women, and those with sensitive skin.
3. Apply Sunscreen in Winter Too
Ultraviolet rays can be effective every day of the year, not just in summer. They can damage the skin even on cloudy days and behind glass. That is why it is important to use sunscreen in every season.
4. Pay Attention to Product Expiration
Expired sunscreens may lose their effectiveness. Pay attention to the open jar symbol on the product packaging and high protection indicators such as “++++”.
5. Wear Hats and Sunglasses
Wide-brimmed hats, UV-protected glasses, and thin long-sleeved clothing protect your skin directly from the sun's rays.
6. Do Not Go Out During Peak Sun Hours
Avoid going out in the sun, especially between 10:00 and 16:00. UV rays are at their most intense levels during these hours.
7. Be Careful Even in the Shade
Staying in the shade is beneficial, but you still need to continue taking protective measures due to rays reflecting off the ground.
8. Keep Exposure Time Short
Despite protective measures, staying in the sun for a long time is risky. If possible, limit your time in the sun.
9. Additional Protective Products with Doctor's Advice
Those with extreme sensitivity to the sun or risk factors can take additional precautions, such as protective pills, upon a doctor's recommendation.
10. Stay Away from Tanning Beds
Tanning bed devices expose you to a much higher rate of UV rays than natural sunlight and carry serious risks of skin cancer.
You can protect your health by taking conscious precautions while enjoying the sun.
