Your blurred vision complaint might be caused by diabetes
Sudden spikes and drops in blood sugar can lead to diabetic retinopathy by affecting the blood vessels in the retina, which is responsible for vision.
Ophthalmology Specialist Op. Dr. Adnan İpçioğlu warned that sudden fluctuations in blood sugar can cause diabetic retinopathy, a condition that threatens eye health.
Stating that diabetic retinopathy is a condition that occurs when the blood vessels in the retina—the nerve layer responsible for vision—are affected, Dr. İpçioğlu pointed out that the incidence of this disease increases, especially in individuals who have had diabetes for more than 10 years. He emphasized the importance of everyone with diabetes having a comprehensive eye examination at least once a year.
Eye examination is important
Emphasizing that people diagnosed with diabetes should have an eye examination immediately after diagnosis, Dr. İpçioğlu stated that those who have had diabetes for more than 1 year should have an eye examination every 6 months, and those with identified fundus problems should have one every 3 months.
Expressing that an effective method in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy is "laser photocoagulation," Dr. İpçioğlu explained that this treatment suppresses signals originating from the retinal tissue, thereby preventing the formation of new vessels and hemorrhages, and preserving the level of vision.
Dr. İpçioğlu emphasized that regular eye examinations for diabetic patients to protect their eye health are of critical importance for the early detection and treatment of problems such as diabetic retinopathy.
