The secret to happiness is in boiled and roasted corn
Karya Farma HBX R&D, based in Aydın, which conducts scientific studies on endemic plants in the Aegean Region as well as various vegetables and fruits, has announced that sweet corn, which is generally consumed boiled or roasted, not only has nutritional value but also triggers the release of dopamine and serotonin, known as happiness hormones.
Making a statement regarding the results of the studies, Chemist Aslı Aktaş, a member of the Karya Farma HBX R&D Scientific Board, said, "You can consume corn not only for nutrition and taste, but also for your happiness."
The Karya Farma HBX R&D team, which carries out its specific and strategic activities at Aydın Adnan Menderes University (ADÜ) Technopark, took sweet corn, which is consumed all over the country, especially in the Aegean and Black Sea regions, into the laboratory for this week's studies.
Stating that roasted and boiled corn is more than just a delicious snack and is a food source that can increase the body's happiness hormones, Chemist Aslı Aktaş said, "Especially roasted and boiled corn has the property of contributing to people feeling happier, more motivated, and more energetic by increasing the levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine," and recommended that people consume such food at least occasionally.
Noting that serotonin is an important hormone for mood balance as well as happiness, Aktaş said, "Corn contains an amino acid called tryptophan, and this amino acid supports serotonin production. The carbohydrates in roasted and boiled corn help tryptophan reach the brain, accelerating serotonin production. A balanced serotonin level ensures mental and emotional balance. With these properties, corn can contribute to people feeling better about themselves."
