Vitamin D deficiency in winter weakens immunity

During the winter months, people are forced to spend more time in closed and dry environments due to the cold weather. This can lead to an increase in various illnesses.

Stating that the best way to keep the immune system strong is through a balanced and healthy diet, Dr. Burak Erim from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics said, "With the shortening of days and cooling of the weather, Vitamin D deficiency can also be observed. The main source of Vitamin D is the sun. However, unfortunately, we cannot be exposed to much daylight during the winter months. Therefore, we can consume foods rich in Vitamin D," he said.

"EGG YOLK IS ALSO RICH IN VITAMIN D"

Explaining foods rich in Vitamin D, Dr. Erim said, "Fatty fish stand out among these. Furthermore, fatty fish such as salmon and anchovies are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids. We recommend consuming them 2-3 days a week. These are important for strengthening the immune system. Egg yolk also has a significant Vitamin D content," he said.

"GUT HEALTH IS IMPORTANT FOR IMMUNITY"

Underlining that Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant, Dr. Erim said the following:

"It is important for the body's immunity. It is found in abundance in all winter vegetables and fruits, especially citrus fruits. They are also rich in fiber. Fiber is also quite important for gut health. Many of the immune cells are located in the intestines. For this reason, it is very important that they are healthy. Herbal teas rich in Vitamin C, such as rosehip, can also be consumed."

"ONION AND GARLIC ARE NATURAL ANTIOXIDANTS"

Touching upon the decrease in water consumption during the winter months, Dr. Erim said, "Attention must be paid to this. Zinc is an important mineral for strengthening the immune system. For this, we can consume nuts, especially pumpkin seeds. Since time spent outdoors decreases in winter, there are also decreases in physical activities.

Physical activity is also an important factor that strengthens the immune system. Onions and garlic have an important place in Turkish cuisine. Garlic is also an important natural antioxidant.

It has antibacterial properties and is a natural antibiotic. We can also strengthen our immune system by adding onions and garlic to soups in our evening meals," he said.
