Warning for those taking cold showers to cool off in summer heat: It can cause death
Explaining that cold showers taken to cool off in hot weather can cause blood vessels to constrict, Specialist Family Physician Saadet Gök said, "Water conducts heat energy 30 times more effectively than air. For this reason, the effect of cold water on the circulatory system is faster and more intense compared to cold air. Entering a cold shower suddenly from a very hot environment can lead to negative consequences ranging from fainting to death."
Due to sweltering temperatures, many people prefer to take cold showers to cool off. While this method provides quick relief, it carries a serious health risk.
Stating that taking cold showers and pouring ice water over one's head to cool off can lead to facial paralysis and heart attacks, Specialist Family Physician Dr. Saadet Gök said, "One of the wrong methods developed to cope with extreme heat is pouring a bucket full of ice over one's head. Such situations can cause facial paralysis or trigger an underlying heart attack in a person."

Gök continued her remarks as follows:
"Another incorrect method is the temperature of the cold or warm shower taken to refresh oneself from hot weather, which is very important. Regardless of the outside temperature, we recommend water between 22 and 26 degrees. The human body tries to keep its temperature constant. Water conducts heat energy 30 times more effectively than air. For this reason, the effect of cold water on the circulatory system is faster and more intense compared to cold air. Showering with excessively cold water can lead to constriction of blood vessels, and can cause heart attacks and facial paralysis."
