‘Weight control’ tips for the summer months
Increased temperatures and humidity in the summer months accelerate the loss of water and minerals in the body, while also potentially causing the metabolism to slow down. This change makes weight control more difficult and requires dietary habits to be readjusted according to the season.
Long hours spent outdoors and irregular meal times due to travel schedules can make weight control difficult. Prof. İsmet Tamer, a member of the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board, who points out the importance of proper nutrition to both maintain body balance and stay in shape during the summer months, shares his nutrition tips and points to consider for the summer season.
LIGHT AND BALANCED BREAKFAST
Prof. İsmet Tamer suggests starting the day with a light and balanced breakfast to stabilize energy levels throughout the day. Tamer says, “Light but nutritious choices should be made for breakfast; a balanced start with low-fat cheese, eggs, olives, and seasonal vegetables should be preferred. For the rest of the day, heavy and fatty foods should be avoided, and meals should be grilled, boiled, baked, or steamed. The immune system should be supported with the consumption of plenty of vegetables and fruits. In addition, plenty of water should be consumed against the loss of fluid and minerals that increases with sweating.”
WATER CONSUMPTION IS OF VITAL IMPORTANCE
The body's fluid balance can easily be disrupted in the summer season. For this reason, it is necessary to drink at least 2 to 2.5 liters of water every day. Prof. İsmet Tamer offers the following suggestions: “Those who have difficulty drinking water can make this habit easier by adding flavor to water with natural aromas. Regular water consumption not only ensures hydration but also helps the metabolism function regularly and aids in the elimination of toxins.”
FLUID LOSS INCREASES WITH EXERCISE
Reminding that physical activity is essential alongside a balanced diet for an active life, Prof. Tamer explains the points to consider when exercising during the summer period as follows: “Swimming, walking, and light-paced outdoor exercises are among the most suitable options for the summer. An exercise program of at least 3-4 days a week for an average of 45 minutes contributes to both staying in shape and keeping the metabolism active. However, it should not be forgotten that fluid loss increases even more during physical activity. Therefore, it is extremely important to drink a few glasses of water before exercise and to consume water at regular intervals during exercise.”
