What is laryngopharyngeal reflux and how is it treated? Ways to get rid of throat reflux

Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), often referred to as throat reflux, is a lesser-known type of reflux that occurs when stomach acid travels up to the throat, causing symptoms. This condition can be the underlying cause of issues such as hoarseness, chronic throat clearing, and laryngitis.

The treatment of LPR primarily involves reorganizing the patient's eating and lifestyle habits. The duration of this treatment depends on how quickly the patient changes their lifestyle habits.

Foods that increase or cause reflux include acidic, spicy, and high-fat foods, fried foods, foods with sauces, and foods containing preservatives added to extend shelf life.

HOW IS LARYNGOPHARYNGEAL REFLUX TREATED?

  • At the beginning of the treatment, it is necessary to avoid products such as tea, coffee, cola, chocolate, yogurt, fatty milk, and freshly squeezed orange juice.
  • Another important point is the increase in green tea consumption due to the recent rise in the use of herbal products. Green tea is also a significant beverage that increases reflux.
  • A break will be required during the treatment period. Dinner time should be scheduled at least 3 hours before bedtime.
  • In addition to dietary adjustments, movements that increase intra-abdominal pressure should be avoided, and tight pants should not be worn. Using reflux pillows that keep the head 15 degrees higher than the body during sleep will reduce nighttime reflux.
  • Stress is a significant factor that increases reflux. We should stay away from stress and excessive fatigue as much as possible.
  • Drug treatment involves medications that reduce stomach acid secretion, mechanically prevent stomach acid from escaping upward, and increase the emptying of stomach contents. The treatment period varies between 3-6 months.
