When does exercise pain become dangerous? Take action for your health on May 10

Emphasizing that many health problems caused by inactivity can be prevented through regular exercise, Prof. Dr. Semih Akı, a Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Specialist at Anadolu Medical Center, said, "Sports is a habit that should be maintained at every age. The important point here is to choose a sport or exercise plan suitable for the person's age, gender, health status, and expectations. For example, young children can be directed toward team sports like basketball or volleyball to establish a habit of sharing, while performance-enhancing types like swimming or tennis can be recommended for teenagers."

SPORTS AT EVERY AGE, HEALTH AT EVERY AGE

Stating that while sports are necessary at all times and for everyone, any physical activity done unconsciously can pave the way for various injuries, Akı warned, "If sports activities are not performed properly, it is inevitable that they will harm the body. Physical activities not performed at the ideal intensity, duration, and frequency can even lead to injuries that may require surgical operations. It is natural to have pain in the worked areas after training, but if these complaints last longer than 24 hours and are accompanied by bruising, swelling, numbness, or tenderness, it is beneficial to consult a health center."

WARM-UP AND COOL-DOWN PHASES SHOULD NOT BE SKIPPED

Emphasizing that a sports and exercise program should be carried out as recommended by a good expert, Akı said, "Warm-up movements before exercise and cool-down movements after should not be neglected. One should know which areas and muscle groups in the body the sports equipment to be used will work. The reason for this is that exercise programs targeting muscle groups and exercise programs targeting respiratory or circulatory systems have quite different methods and activities. Doing exercises such as walking, swimming, or cycling at a moderate intensity for 30-60 minutes, 4-5 days a week, can be considered ideal for staying healthy and fit."
