20 arrests in capital markets investigations: Assets of suspects frozen

New decisions have been made in investigations conducted into suspicious and manipulative transactions in capital markets. According to information provided by Akın Gürlek, 4 suspects were arrested due to transactions in fund and equity markets, while judicial control measures in the form of travel bans were applied to 51 people.

It was stated that the investigations were carried out following criminal complaints filed by the Capital Markets Board (SPK) alleging that manipulative transactions were conducted in certain fund and equity markets under Article 107 of the Capital Markets Law No. 6362. It was noted that those arrested include chairmen and members of fund boards of directors.

ASSET FREEZE DECISION

To prevent the suspects from disposing of their assets, precautionary measures were taken regarding the relevant accounts and all asset values. Within the scope of a separate investigation initiated ex officio by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, access bans were issued for 246 social media accounts alleged to have made speculative posts that could cause fear and panic among investors.

It was reported that the access ban decision was taken by the Istanbul 1st Criminal Judgeship of Peace and sent to the Cyber Security Presidency for implementation.

In a separate file conducted by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, judicial proceedings were initiated against account holders who made posts aimed at manipulating capital markets via social media. It was announced that 16 suspects were arrested within the scope of this investigation.

It was also noted that an indictment was prepared against 41 suspects as a result of an investigation conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office this year regarding findings of unusual fluctuations in trading volumes and stock prices.

Gürlek stated that suspicions of crimes in capital markets are being followed by judicial authorities, adding that operations continue against individuals and structures that target citizens' savings through Ponzi-like methods and attempt to gain unfair profit through misleading guidance.
