Academic Aslı Aydemir arrested after reacting to LeMan protesters: Resisting police

LeMan magazine faced intense backlash on social media due to a cartoon that allegedly depicted the Prophet Muhammad. This situation triggered protests targeting the magazine's office in Beyoğlu.

During the protests, an argument broke out between Peace Academic Aslı Aydemir and a group.

As the argument escalated, a glass standing on Aydemir's table fell to the ground and shattered, during which her spouse's hand was cut.

POLICE INTERVENTION AND ARREST PROCESS

According to a report by Can Öztürk from T24, a police officer who intervened at the scene was also injured in the hand during the scuffle. Upon the officer's complaint, Aydemir was taken into custody following a raid on her home.

After her procedures at the police station, Aydemir was referred to the prosecutor's office and was subsequently arrested by the Istanbul 5th Criminal Court of Peace.

Aydemir's lawyer, Yunus Emre Işık, reacted to his client's arrest, stating that the incident was not an intentional injury.

Işık said, "The glass in Aslı's hand broke during the attack, and the police officer was injured during this. However, this situation was evaluated as intentional injury."

Peace Academics expressed their support for Aslı Aydemir on social media. In the statement released, it was said, "The innocence of our dear colleague Aslı Aydemir is clear. We stand with her!" Aydemir's arrest was also met with backlash in academic circles.
