Animal lovers gather to protest 'Eros' verdict: 'There is no good conduct for murder'

On New Year's Eve, in the public case regarding the cat named Eros, who was killed in Istanbul, the defendant İbrahim Keloğlan had been sentenced to 3 years in prison.

After the court applied a 'good conduct' reduction to the defendant's sentence, it was reduced to 2.5 years, and a decision was made to impose a travel ban and judicial control measures.

With this decision, the defendant was released. To protest the ruling, animal rights advocates held a press conference on Sakarya Street.

"WE WERE GOING TO ENSURE JUSTICE, BUT IT DID NOT HAPPEN"

In the statement, it was noted that they had expected the prison sentence for the individual who kicked Eros to death over the course of 6 minutes to serve as a precedent, stating:

“We waited for this moment with bated breath and joined hands. We had made a promise to Eros. We were going to ensure justice. It did not happen.

The system granted the killer of Eros a good conduct reduction. The killer was released by using the fact that he went to a village and fed animals after killing Eros as a way to exonerate the perpetrator.

We are ashamed that in this country, a cat can be kicked to death for 6 minutes. We are ashamed that the cat killer did not receive a prison sentence and was instead granted a good conduct reduction."

SIT-IN PROTEST HELD

Continuing the statement, it was emphasized that the sale of animals is not prohibited under the Animal Protection Law, adding, "We are ashamed that you call Eros 'ownerless' by distinguishing between animals you call 'lives' as owned or ownerless. Every animal is the subject of its own life.

They are living beings, not property, and there is no good conduct for any animal murder, just as there should be no good conduct in cases of femicide.

We accept neither your 'necktie' reductions nor your expressions of remorse. There is no good conduct for something that has no remedy,” the statement concluded.

Following the press conference, a sit-in protest was held for animals.
