Call from his wife: Tayfun Kahraman's health is at risk in prison
Meriç Demir Kahraman, the wife of urban planner Tayfun Kahraman, who is being held in prison following his conviction in the Gezi Park protests, addressed the public after her latest visit to Silivri Prison. Kahraman reiterated her demand for justice to political party leaders and members of parliament.
Urban planner Tayfun Kahraman’s health issues in prison have become a focal point following statements made by his wife, Meriç Demir Kahraman, on social media and after her visits. In a message shared on January 19, Meriç Demir Kahraman stated that her husband, who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis (MS), had fallen ill in his cell, resulting in injuries to his head and hand. She noted that after being taken to the hospital with injuries and swelling, Tayfun Kahraman was returned to prison, and a splint was placed on his hand due to persistent swelling and bruising.
In a statement made after her latest visit to the prison, Meriç Demir Kahraman drew attention to the severity of her husband's health condition, saying, "We couldn't even touch the scabbed-over gash on Tayfun's forehead or his fractured hand..."
Pointing out that her husband, Tayfun Kahraman, has been battling MS for approximately 22 years, Meriç Demir Kahraman stated that he is currently in an acute phase of the disease. However, she underscored that they have not applied to the Council of Forensic Medicine, stating, "For this reason, we have no application to the Council of Forensic Medicine, and we will not have one."
EMPHASIS ON LAW AND JUSTICE
Reporting that she and her daughter had a one-hour meeting with Tayfun Kahraman behind a glass partition, Meriç Demir Kahraman addressed members of parliament and political party leaders, emphasizing the justice system and the rule of law.
Arguing that Tayfun Kahraman did not receive a fair trial despite the Constitutional Court's ruling and that there is no concrete evidence of a crime against him, Meriç Demir Kahraman stated, "If the Republic of Turkey is a state of law and if our Constitution is in effect, what should happen is: our second Constitutional Court application must be decided upon urgently, the lower court must comply with the Constitution, and Tayfun must be released to be retried—this time fairly—and his treatment must be provided under hospital and home conditions."
Describing how her husband has been separated from his family and child for nearly four years while being held in prison, and how his health has been tested, Meriç Demir Kahraman appealed as follows:
"I am calling out primarily to all legal professionals, all political party chairmen, and all members of parliament serving under the roof of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey; we want justice. We want nothing but justice."
Developments regarding Tayfun Kahraman's health status and imprisonment continue to be closely followed by the public.
