Constitutional Court issues May 1 ruling for Taksim
The Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK) and the Confederation of Public Employees' Unions (KESK) took the government's long-standing attempt to block May 1 celebrations in Taksim Square to the Constitutional Court (AYM). The Constitutional Court ruled that the ban constitutes a violation of rights.
The celebration of May 1 Labor Day in Taksim Square has long been blocked by the government.
The Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK) and the Confederation of Public Employees' Unions (KESK) had taken the ban to the Constitutional Court (AYM) on the grounds that it was unlawful.
The Constitutional Court's decision regarding the application was published in today's issue of the Official Gazette.
The ban on the celebration in Taksim was found to be 'contrary to the right to organize meetings and demonstration marches, which is guaranteed under Article 34 of the Constitution,' by a majority vote.
The High Court rejected the application regarding the 'violation of the prohibition of ill-treatment' on the grounds that it was 'manifestly ill-founded.'
