Femicides show no sign of ending! Statement of the suspect who killed his wife after an argument revealed

The incident took place in the Şahinbey district of Gaziantep. On January 17, 2024, at approximately 17:00, Eyüp Turan Karabağ (34), an auto mechanic, shot his wife Bahar Karabağ (31) with a handgun following an argument. In his first statement at the police station, Karabağ claimed that the gun went off while he was cleaning it and that he had killed his wife accidentally. In his second statement, Karabağ said the gun went off accidentally while he was playing with it. In a statement taken by the Gaziantep Provincial Police Department, the suspect husband claimed he had taken the gun with the intention of committing suicide and that it went off during an argument between them.

The prosecutor's office is currently preparing an indictment for the suspect, who is being held in custody. Bahar Karabağ’s brother, Ömer Taşkömür, who says Eyüp Turan Karabağ is trying to frame the event as an accident to receive a sentence reduction, wants the truth to come to light.

WHILE ATTEMPTING SUICIDE

Speaking to 12Punto, the brother Ömer Taşkömür alleged that all three statements given by the suspect were contradictory. Arguing that his sister's death was not an accident, brother Taşkömür recounted the events of the day as follows:

"They had an argument over the phone on Wednesday, January 17. Around 16:00, my sister called my father. After she said, 'Father, come to us quickly, this Eyüp is going to kill me, he has a gun,' my father left and went to the house. When he arrived, the murderer was running down the stairs. When they saw each other on the stairs, he blocked my father from going up. When my father pushed past him and went up, he saw his daughter lying in the bedroom covered in blood. They went to the hospital together. By the time he reached the hospital, she had passed away. The police arrested Eyüp Turan Karabağ there. In the statement Karabağ gave at the hospital, he said, 'It went off in my hand while I was cleaning the gun.' When he went to the police station again, he gave this statement: 'It went off accidentally in my hand while I was playing with the gun.'"

FROM POINT-BLANK RANGE…

In the statement he gave at the Gaziantep Provincial Police Department in the presence of his lawyer, the suspect Eyüp Turan Karabağ said the following:

“I said to my wife Bahar, ‘I am struggling with so many economic difficulties and hardships, why are you creating such tension? I don't even want to live anymore. Come on, let's not argue in front of the children, let's go to the bedroom and talk.’ We both entered the bedroom. I shouted at my wife again, ‘Why aren't you helping me, why do you oppose everything I say and create tension? Do you really want me to take my own life?’ I couldn't control my nerves anymore; I opened the door of the wardrobe in the bedroom to get my gun, which was in the top compartment—I don't remember if I used my right or left hand—I lifted my hand up and took my 7.65 mm gun from the top compartment. As soon as I took the gun, I pulled the slide and released it. With a sudden reflex, the gun in my right hand: the moment I pointed it at my head, my wife Bahar, who was right in front of me, said 'Stop, don't,' and grabbed my right elbow where the gun was with both hands. The moment she pulled my hand back away from me, towards herself, with a quick reflex, my finger was on the trigger, so it applied pressure and the gun fired one shot. I don't know if my wife's hands were touching the gun at that moment. My wife Bahar, who was trying to stop me, was wounded in the head and fell onto the bed.”

According to the findings of the Public Prosecutor's Office preliminary autopsy report, the bullet that struck the victim was lethal, and it is stated that the shot was fired from point-blank range.

'MY DAUGHTER WAS LYING ON THE FLOOR WOUNDED'

In his statement to the prosecutor's office, the suspect Karabağ described the aftermath of the incident with these words:

“I called 112 from my own mobile phone to report the incident, gave the address, and asked for an ambulance immediately. Thinking the ambulance would be delayed, I grabbed my wife, who was lying on the bed wounded in the head, by both arms and was trying to drag her outside when I saw my father-in-law enter while I was still in the hallway. The apartment door was open. While I was trying to drag my wife out, I was also shouting, 'Help.' My father-in-law Metin was already by my side.”

Father M.T. refuted the statements of the suspect Karabağ in his testimony taken at the Gaziantep Chief Public Prosecutor's Office:

“While I was going up the stairs of the building where my daughter lived, I encountered Karabağ. When I asked where my daughter was, he stood in front of me, saying, 'There is nothing wrong with your daughter, don't go inside.' I insisted on going inside. He then said to me, 'Let me bring my car to the front of the building,' and when he moved out of my way, I entered my daughter's residence. When I went directly into the bedroom, my daughter was lying on the floor wounded in the head.”

Taşkömür stated that the suspect Karabağ is being tried while in custody and alleged that the incident is being framed as an accident. Karabağ claimed in his statement that he was trying to take his wife outside at the time of the incident. Taşkömür continued as follows:

“The prosecutor is preparing the indictment. The gun is also illegal. The ballistic reports of the gun and the phone are being examined. Also, he says he called 112, but no ambulance came at all. The distance between their house and the hospital is 5 minutes. After the incident, he called his friends at work, his brother-in-law, and his father, trying to reach them. There are phone records of him calling these people.”

ALLEGATIONS OF PRIOR VIOLENCE AND THREATS

Brother Ömer Taşkömür also alleged that his sister had been subjected to violence and threats for the last year. Emphasizing that his sister did not tell her family about the situation because she was afraid, Taşkömür said:

“For the last year, he constantly subjected my sister to violence, threatened her, and beat her. He would tell my sister, 'You will not tell anyone about this; if you tell, I will kill your family.' A woman came to the funeral. She had left a will for her to tell the woman. 'He beats me a lot, torments me, threatens me. I can't tell anyone, otherwise he will kill me. Tell my mother and father not to cry, let them take good care of my children.' The other side's family also knew about the violence. They tried to cover it up.

He put one of the children in the room with the television. He turned the television up to the highest volume. The other one was sleeping. One of the children probably saw it. Their psychology is not good. The children are with us. We have also filed for custody.”
