Former MASAK President Başak issues asset warning regarding Gökçek investigation

Former Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK) President Ramazan Başak has made assessments regarding the "unregistered money transfer" investigation conducted by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office into the Gökçek family.

In a statement on his social media account, Başak drew attention to the physical cash deposits in the bank accounts of Hülya and Ahmet Gökçek mentioned in the court referral document reflected in the public domain, as well as the alleged discrepancy between their economic status and the money movements.

The former MASAK President pointed to the seriousness of the claims and amounts in question, arguing that the legal process requires protective measures regarding the suspects' assets.

“The amounts are very large and the allegations are very serious.”

Başak stated that in normal legal procedure, Article 128 of the Criminal Procedure Code, titled "Seizure of Immovables, Rights and Receivables," could be invoked. He expressed that in cases where delay is considered detrimental, assets included in the MASAK report should be seized in accordance with Article 17 of the Law No. 5549 on Prevention of Laundering Proceeds of Crime, titled "Protective Measures."

In his statement, Başak also drew attention to the possibility of the assets changing hands, warning that if measures are not taken, the process could become ineffective. It was reported that the legal process regarding the allegations in the investigation is being conducted by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.
