He killed his mother's boyfriend and blended his brain

In an incident that took place in the Staten Island borough of New York, Damien Hurstel killed his mother's boyfriend and blended the victim's brain in a kitchen blender. According to police reports, pieces of the victim's brain were found at the scene.

At the crime scene, a ladle and a spoon were seen next to the victim's body. Hurstel confessed that after decapitating his mother's boyfriend, he removed the brain and placed it in the blender.

The killer's lawyer, Mark Fonte, stated that his client is not of sound mind, arguing that he cannot distinguish between reality and fantasy. During his interrogation, Hurstel said he did not remember why he was taken to the hospital after the incident.

His mother, Alicia Zayas, stated that after the murder, her son showed his 16-year-old sister the bloody bathroom and asked, "Do you want my mother to live?"

MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES

Hurstel admitted to stabbing Anthony Casalaspro to death and decapitating him at his family's home in West Brighton on October 6. He was sent to Rikers Island jail on charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon.

Zayas stated that her son began experiencing hallucinations at the age of 13 and started taking antipsychotic medication. However, Hurstel was unable to follow the treatment process once he turned 18. Zayas said her son's medication was changed in January and that she was not aware of this change. Richmond University Medical Center did not disclose patient information.
