In the Alanya district of Antalya, 66-year-old R.K., who was detained on allegations of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in a park, has been arrested by the court.
It was reported that R.K., who was processed by the District Police Department teams upon the instructions of the Alanya Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, had been detained for the fourth time for the same reason. After his procedures at the police station, R.K. was referred to the courthouse and sent to prison by the duty magistrate judge on charges of "insulting the President."
It was stated that R.K. made remarks drawing attention to his housing problem during his testimony at the courthouse. It was noted that R.K. said, "I have nowhere to stay, I sleep in garbage dumps. That is why I resorted to this path."
The incident came to the fore particularly amid discussions regarding approaching winter conditions and housing shortages. R.K.'s words were evaluated as one of the examples where livelihood and housing problems intersect with judicial processes.
The crime of "insulting the President," regulated under Article 299 of the Turkish Penal Code, carries a prison sentence of 1 to 4 years. It is stated that since the transition to the Presidential Government System, the number of reports, investigations, and prosecution files reaching public prosecutors under this charge has exceeded 200 thousand.
