Justice Minister Gürlek’s statement on the Gülistan Doku case: Possibility of chemical substances being investigated

Justice Minister Akın Gürlek, in a meeting with courthouse reporters in Istanbul, made statements regarding the investigation into university student Gülistan Doku, who has been missing since January 5, 2020. Expressing that there could be new developments in the case, Gürlek said, "Gülistan may have been disposed of using a chemical substance."

Reminding that the Gülistan Doku investigation was reopened in recent months, Gürlek stated that the priority issue in the file is to reach Doku's body. Minister Gürlek noted that there is information in some statements suggesting that the body may have been moved several times.

Pointing to the importance of the answers the family has been waiting for for years, Gürlek said, "It is very important for us, at least in terms of ensuring that her family can pray at their child's grave."

LATEST STATUS IN THE ROJİN KABAİŞ INVESTIGATION

Gürlek also provided information about the investigation into the death of Rojin Kabaiş, whose lifeless body was found on the shore of Lake Van. Stating that some uncertainties regarding her mobile phone have not yet been resolved, Gürlek said that DNA examinations are being conducted and technical work on the phone is ongoing.

Minister Gürlek stated that it is not possible to say at this stage that concrete data leading to a direct and definitive conclusion has been reached in the file. Gürlek noted that the relevant Chief Public Prosecutor's Office is evaluating different aspects, but there is no clear result that can be shared with the public yet.

Investigations into religious structures were also brought up at the meeting. Stating that financial relations are at the center of the investigation into the Süleymancılar, Gürlek expressed that international judicial assistance mechanisms are being operated within the scope of cooperation with judicial authorities in Germany.

"We have no issue with any sect, any religious community, or any civil organization," said Gürlek, noting that the investigation focuses on the financial structure deemed to constitute a crime within the framework of MASAK reports and other evidence. Stating that there is no special study targeting the Menzil Community, Gürlek added that, however, if a suspicion of crime arises, the prosecutor's offices will do what is necessary in line with the evidence.

Gürlek also answered questions regarding the investigations launched into Ahmet Davutoğlu and Melih Gökçek. Stating that it is assessed that the statute of limitations has not expired in the process carried out against Davutoğlu for allegedly insulting the President, Gürlek noted that the investigation into Gökçek and his sons began with reports.

Stating that an additional indictment could be prepared in the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) case, Gürlek noted that work is being carried out on new evidence, reports, and legal evaluations. The Minister said that allegations of illegal betting and match-fixing are being examined not only in football but also in different sports fields, including basketball.
