New development in France regarding the Jamal Khashoggi murder: Allegations of torture and enforced disappearance
The case of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was murdered at the Saudi Arabian Consulate General, has been brought back to the agenda of judicial authorities in France within the scope of allegations of torture and enforced disappearance.
A judge in Paris has been authorized to launch a new judicial investigation into the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. The French National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office (PNAT) announced that the investigation in question will specifically include charges of "torture" and "enforced disappearance."
Applications filed by human rights organizations TRIAL International and Reporters Without Borders were evaluated and accepted by the Paris Court of Appeal. However, a separate application filed by DAWN, the organization where Khashoggi worked, was rejected by the court.
INTERNATIONAL DEBATE OVER THE MURDER CONTINUES
Journalist Jamal Khashoggi was murdered at the Saudi Arabian Consulate General in Istanbul in October 2018, and his body disappeared. The assessment by US intelligence that the order for the murder was given by Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had caused a stir in the international community. Bin Salman denied ordering the assassination but stated that the incident occurred during his administration.
On the other hand, in the trial conducted in Turkey, the court in Istanbul decided in 2022 to halt the case against 26 Saudi defendants and transfer the file to the Saudi Arabian judicial authorities. This development was criticized by many organizations, especially human rights defenders.
