New footage emerges in the accident that killed medical student Yaren Mercan in Kayseri

New footage of the moment of the accident has emerged while the trial continues regarding the crash in the Talas district of Kayseri, which resulted in the death of 22-year-old medical student Yaren Mercan.

The accident occurred on the evening of March 19 on Sayer Street in the Mevlana neighborhood. A car driven by Kadir Efe collided with the motorcycle ridden by Yaren Mercan. Mercan, who was thrown by the impact of the collision, passed away one day later at the hospital where she had been taken.

Mercan, a 4th-year student at Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine, was laid to rest at the city cemetery on March 21 following autopsy procedures. A doctor's white coat was placed over Mercan's coffin during the funeral.

INDICTMENT PREPARED AGAINST THE DEFENDANT

Following the accident, car driver Kadir Efe was detained, and checks revealed he had a blood alcohol level of 1.05 promille. Efe was arrested by the court.

Following the completion of the investigation conducted by the Kayseri Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, the prepared indictment was accepted by the 25th Criminal Court of First Instance. A sentence was requested for the defendant for the crime of "causing death by conscious negligence."

At the first hearing held last week, the detained defendant Kadir Efe participated via SEGBIS from prison. Yaren Mercan's mother Binnaz, father Mehmet, older sister Büşra, and younger sister Damla Mercan, along with the lawyers for both sides, were present in the courtroom. Mercan's friends from the medical faculty also supported the family by wearing their white coats.

In his defense, defendant Efe stated that he had been in custody for 3 months, saying, "I provide for my household. I know I will receive a sentence. I will have another child soon. The incident was entirely a traffic accident. I request my release."

The Mercan family, however, demanded that the defendant be punished in the most severe way possible. The court decided to continue the defendant's detention and adjourned the hearing to address missing information.

In the newly emerged footage, it can be seen that Yaren Mercan, who was said to have spent the Ramadan Feast holiday in Kayseri studying, was thrown into the air by the impact of the collision, and her helmet also came off her head and fell to the ground.
