New judicial year begins with a busy schedule: Critical trials to be heard in September

With the start of the new judicial year, a busy period is opening in the judiciary. Following the end of the judicial recess, critical hearings will be held throughout September in numerous cases closely followed by the public.

Prominent topics for the new term include the legal process regarding the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, the Ayhan Bora Kaplan criminal organization case, the CHP Congress criminal case, and various other high criminal court cases. The court calendar will be particularly intense at the Ankara and Istanbul courthouses.

PROMINENT HEARINGS IN SEPTEMBER

The trial regarding the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) will continue following a short break. It is stated that Ekrem İmamoğlu will file a request for acquittal at the hearing on September 3. On the same day, the trial of the Ayhan Bora Kaplan criminal organization will continue at the Ankara 32nd High Criminal Court.

Another important item on the September calendar will be the CHP Congress criminal case. The case will be heard at the Ankara 26th Criminal Court of First Instance on September 16. Mehmet Akif Ersoy, who has been in custody for approximately 9 months and faces up to 266 years in prison, is expected to appear before the judge at the Istanbul 19th High Criminal Court on September 10.

A notable hearing will also take place at the end of the month. The hearing for the case in which Ekrem İmamoğlu, Merdan Yanardağ, and Necati Özkan are being tried on charges of "political espionage" will be held on September 29 at the Istanbul 25th High Criminal Court.

According to a report by Gamze Erdoğan from Türkiye Gazetesi, the case regarding the murder of 17-year-old Atlas Çağlayan in Bakırköy will continue on September 8 at the Bakırköy 2nd High Criminal Court. It had been stated that Çağlayan was killed by a peer in an incident described as a "you looked at me the wrong way" fight.

With the end of the judicial recess at the Ankara Courthouse, increased activity is expected, particularly in the high criminal courts. It is stated that some operations that began following changes at the courthouse will continue, and that investigations into Alihan Kuriş and his associates will be deepened.

It is also noted that financial investigations are ongoing in cases involving mayors who were arrested following operations targeting the Çankaya and Etimesgut municipalities.

A new practice will also be implemented in judicial services in the new judicial year. Citizens' requests and complaints will begin to be received via the "Alo 135 Justice Line" at the Ankara, Kayseri, and Istanbul courthouses.

The goal is to direct reports and applications received by the line to the relevant units, reduce the workload of judicial personnel, and accelerate processes in long-running cases such as divorce, land registry, and labor disputes.
